This office acts as the caretaker of all records of the county pertaining to land titles and transfers. Various forms of deeds, mortgages, bankruptcies, mechanic liens, probate papers, corporate name changes, and plat maps are recorded here. This Office provides service in three distinctive areas: Real Estate Document Records, Vital Statistic Records & Passports.

Vital Statistic Records and Passports
Birth Certificate:

The fee is $26.00 for the first certified copy and $19.00 for each additional certified copy of the same record if ordered at the same time.
You must complete the Minnesota Birth Certificate Application and have your signature notarized before sending it to us along with your payment.
For a non certified birth certificate complete the Non Certified Minnesota Birth Certificate Application. This would be for information only. Would not be a legal document.

Apply in Person:
If applying for a Birth Certificate in person, the requester will need to prove tangible interest and show “proof of identity”. If requester does not have acceptable identification, a witness with acceptable identification can attest to the requester’s identity. The witness must have known the requester for at least two years and a family member is preferred.
Death Certificate

The fee is $13.00 for the first certified copy and $6.00 for each additional certified copy of the same record if ordered at the same time.
Complete the Minnesota Death Certificate Application form and have your signature notarized before sending it to us along with your payment.

Marriage Certificate
Marriage certificates are on file only if the applicants purchased their marriage license in Renville County. If the application was made in another county, contact that county to obtain a certified marriage certificate.
Fees:
The fee is $9 for the first certified copy and $2 for each additional certified copy of the same record if ordered at the same time. You may pay by cash, personal check, money order or credit card when purchasing in person.

Complete the Marriage License Application (pdf) and Email completed form prior to appointment.
If one of the parties cannot appear in person at the Local Registrar’s Office at the time of application for marriage, the applicant appearing will complete the full application supplying all of the information for both parties. This supplemental application (pdf) must be completed by the non appearing marriage applicant. A copy of the marriage application made by the appearing party is on the reverse side of this form.
Fees:
$115.00 without premarital education
$40.00 with proper educator’s statement at the time of marriage license application.
Educator’s Statement:
Parties have had to complete at least 12 hours of premarital education. In order to qualify for the reduced fee, the parties must submit a signed, notarized statement on the person’s letterhead who provided the premarital education confirming that it was received. *The educator’s statement from the person who provided the premarital education under paragraph (b) must be in the following form: “I, (Name of educator), confirm that (Names of both parties) received at least 12 hours of premarital education that included the use of a premarital inventory and the teaching of communication and conflict management skills. I am a licensed or ordained minister, a person authorized to solemnize marriages under Minnesota statutes, section 517.18, or a person licensed to practice marriage and family therapy under Minnesota statutes, section 14813.33.”
The names of the parties in the educator’s statement must be identical to the legal names of the parties as they appear in the marriage license application.
Ministerial Registration
To register your ministerial credentials with Renville County you can mail or register in person a copy of your Ordination Certificate. Please provide your address and phone number. Once your Ordination Certificate has been received and recorded, we will notify you. There is no charge for this service.
Notary Commission Registration
Once you receive your notary commission you must register it, in person or by mail in the County you reside in.
You will need:
- Notary commission paperwork
- $20.00 fee – Payable to Renville County Recorder
- Driver’s License (if registering in person) or your signature notarized by another notary on a blank sheet of white paper (if registering by mail)

**Updated Current Processing Times: As of October 2, 2024. Routine service average time to receive a passport is 4 to 6 weeks. Expedited service average time to receive a passport is 2 to 3 weeks.
Fees:
Recorder’s department takes passport photos for a fee of $12.

Each fee is paid with two separate checks one payable to US Department of State and one to the Renville County Recorder. You may pay by CHECK or MONEY ORDER only.
