What To Do After a Property Ownership Change
While not all situations may pertain to you, here are some tips if you recently had a change in property ownership in Renville County:
Address and Name
- Accurate records are essential to best serve you in the future. Review the name and address on your new property in the County Tax Portal. If they are incorrect, send requested changes to the Renville County Auditor/Treasurer Office:

Driver’s License and Other Licenses
- If you moved, you need to update your driver’s license. You may also need to renew your motor vehicle registration, or renew registration on a watercraft or all-terrain vehicle. Visit the Driver and Vehicle Services Department to learn more or call them 320-523-3612.
Homestead
- If the property you purchased is your primary residence, you may be eligible for the homestead classification, which may reduce the amount of property tax you pay. A change in ownership (new owners, name change, or death of a previous owner) requires a new homestead application.
- To check the status on your homestead classification, contact the Assessor’s Office at 320-523-3645.
Property Taxes
- Tax statements are mailed annually by March 31 to the current owner of record. As a new owner, it is important for you to verify that taxes due in the year of sale are paid. If you are unsure whether the full year taxes have been paid, would like to obtain a copy of the tax statement, or would like to sign up for an electronic tax payment, visit the online property tax portal or the Auditor/Treasurer’s webpage or call 320-523-2071. We strongly recommend that you review your closing documents to determine who is responsible to pay the taxes.
- For most properties, first half tax is due May 15 and second half is due October 15.
- Exceptions:
- Second half for most agricultural properties is due November 15.
- Manufactured home (mobile home) property tax is due August 31 and November 15.
- Exceptions:
- Per statute, a penalty is charged on any late payments. Failure to receive a property tax statement does not exempt you from a timely payment of the taxes due.

- The Recorder’s Office is open to the public. Visit the Recorder’s Office webpage to learn more about the services provided.
Voter Registration
- If your name and/or permanent residential address have changed since you last voted, you must re-register before voting in future elections. Applications are available in most city offices, public libraries, the Renville County Driver and Vehicle Services office (as part of the driver’s license application), or register online with the Minnesota Secretary of State.
