Homestead Exclusion for a Veteran with a Disability
This market value exclusion program reduces the market value of a home of a qualifying disabled veteran, surviving spouse, or primary family caregiver for tax purposes, which may reduce your property tax. The property must have a homestead classification.
There are two exclusion levels, $150,000 and $300,000, depending on your status:
IF YOU ARE A | WITH A | YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR A MARKET VALUE EXCLUSION OF |
Veteran | 100% permanent and total disability rating | $300,000 |
Veteran | 70% or greater service-connected disability rating | $150,000 |
Surviving spouse receiving dependency and indemnity compensation | Veteran’s disability status if not a factor | $300,000 |
Surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran or service member | 100% permanent and total disability rating | $300,000 |
Qualifying primary family caregiver of a veteran | 100% permanent and total disability rating | $300,000 |
Qualifying primary family caregiver of a veteran | 70% or greater service-connected disability | $150,000 |
How to Apply
Applications are available in the Renville County Assessor’s Office (LINK TO PAGE WHEN BUILT). Applications must be made by December 31 to qualify for the exclusion on the current year’s market value for taxes payable next year.
Veterans with a disability rating of 70 percent or higher will need to reapply annually.
Veterans who are totally and permanently disabled do not need to reapply after the initial approval. The property will continue to qualify for the value exclusion until there is a change in ownership or use of the property. A surviving spouse can continue the exclusion under this provision for one additional assessment year, or until the spouse sells, transfers, vacates, or otherwise disposes of the property (whichever occurs first).
