Permission to Burn

Renville County has implemented an implied burning permit policy. This means that a physical permit is no longer required to burn legal materials.

Renville County’s Open Burning Ordinance PDF

For those wishing to burn legal materials such as brush, tree trimmings, tree limbs, and unpainted/untreated lumber, simply notify the Sheriff’s Office – Dispatch at 320-523-1161 prior to starting the fire. If a burn ban is in effect, you will be instructed not to burn.

When you call, the Dispatcher will request the following information:

  • Your name
  • The location of the fire (section and township)
  • A contact phone number for the person attending the fire
  • A description of the materials being burned

According to Renville County’s ordinance, you are required to notify the Dispatch Center before starting a fire. If the fire will burn for multiple days, you must call each morning the fire continues to burn.

This requirement not only ensures compliance with county regulations but could also help you avoid the costs associated with a fire department response to an unreported fire.
